£43M Eredivisie Star Vows To “Seize” Next “Opportunity” To Sign For PL Club After Failed Chelsea Switch

Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez says he will leave the Eredivisie champions at the end of the season if the right “opportunity” presents itself.

Chelsea made a £43m bid for the Mexican international in the summer, only for it to be rejected and, while Alvarez admits he was disappointed that a move didn’t materialise, he has vowed to “seize” the next chance he gets:

“Maybe it wasn’t the right time yet. My time will come, one hundred percent. That is in God’s and my own hands. And I’m working hard to be ready for a new challenge I came to Ajax to learn, to enjoy and to reach the next level.”

“Of course, my focus is one hundred percent on Ajax at the moment. But if something beautiful comes along next summer that is good for Ajax and for me, then I want to seize that opportunity.”

Alvarez shouldn’t be short of suitors. Liverpool were linked with the player earlier this month, while Arsenal, Newcastle and West Ham have also been mentioned as potential destinations.

Whether the 25-year-old would fit the profile that the Reds are looking for, though, it is up for debate. Manager Jurgen Klopp needs dynamic and energetic players in the middle of the park who can press the ball.

Alvarez is more in the mould of Fabinho, breaking up play and making simple passes. The Mexican isn’t a midfielder who will run around the pitch at 100 mph so it’s unlikely he’ll be one of the Merseyside club’s top targets.
