A Combined Liverpool V Manchester United XI: How Many Of Klopp’s Men Make The Line Up?

Anfield Stadium

There’s no doubt that Liverpool are a far superior team to Manchester United at the moment, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that none of United’s side would make the starting eleven if you had the choice of players from both squads.

Combined elevens are usually a source of great debate as you are weighing up traits and characteristics between individual stars who supporters have very different opinions on.

For this starting line up, we have gone for the players we believe are the most talented in their respected positions, rather than their current form or fitness status.

Press the “next page” to find out who made our starting eleven from Liverpool and United:

Alisson

The Brazilian has the highest save percentage of any goalkeeper in the league and rarely makes mistakes. He could well be the best shot-stopper in the world at the moment.

His opposite number, meanwhile, has not reached the same high standards in the last two years with David De Gea having made quite a few mistakes leading to goals.

Trent Alexander-Arnold

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is a better defender, but a modern fullback has to do a lot more than defend these days and the Reds fullback epitomises that change in mindset.

Alexander-Arnold has ten assists already this campaign and is well on the way to surpassing the 16 he achieved last season.

Virgil van Dijk

The Dutchman has more than justified the £75m the Reds paid for him two years ago. He was unlucky to miss out on the Ballon d’Or last month and he continues to excel.

Van Dijk has helped Liverpool to tighten up the back with the Reds having conceded just 14 goals in 21 league games this season.

Harry Maguire

It could be argued that either Joel Matip or Joe Gomez could have been included ahead of the Manchester United defender, but the 26-year-old has proven to be a good leader for the Red Devils.

Maguire may not merit his £80m price tag, but he has been an important component in United’s improved defensive record this campaign.

Andy Robertson

Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams can’t compete with the Scotland international in terms of either their defensive solidity or creativity.

Robertson continues to improve, having created six goals this season, and having played a key role in keeping things tight at the back with the Reds possessing the best defensive record in the league.

The Liverpool captain is a leader which every successful team needs. He always demands more from himself and his teammates.

He is incisive in possession and tenacious without the ball, and his mental toughness is a key quality behind the Reds’ success in winning trophies.

Fabinho

Arguably the best holding midfielder in the world, the Brazilian anticipates danger and is pinpoint accurate with his tackling.

On the ball, Fabinho always looks to make forward passes, and he is key to the Reds starting attacks.

Paul Pogba

On natural ability alone, the Frenchman has to make the eleven. He has flattered to deceive more often than not in a United shirt, but he is a World Cup winner.

Pogba’s passing and dribbling skills are a rare combination which most clubs in world football would like in their team.

Mo Salah

No contest for this position. Dan James and Mason Greenwood are at the beginning of their careers, while the Egyptian king is in his prime.

After scoring 44 goals in his first campaign at Anfield, Salah has continued to rack up the numbers in his next two seasons at Liverpool.

Roberto Firmino

Anthony Martial does have talent, but Bobby’s consistency and unique playing style make him hard to leave out.

The Brazilian has a high work rate and is an excellent link-up man, being a creator as well as a goalscorer.

Sadio Mane

This was a close call between the Senegalese international and Marcus Rashford but the United star has only really come into his own this season.

In contrast, Mane has been in superb form for the best part of two years, and he is arguably Liverpool’s best player at the moment.
