“A Viable Option For Liverpool?” McManaman Addresses Claims That The Reds Could Hijack Move For Arsenal Target

Ex-Liverpool star Steve McMamanan has raised doubts about his former club’s interest in Leicester’s Youri Tielemans.

The Belgian international has been heavily linked with Arsenal this summer but he has been suggested as a target for the Reds, who are looking to strengthen their midfield options. McManaman, though, feels that Jurgen Klopp’s side would already have made a move for the player if they were interested:

“Would Youri Tielemans be a viable option for Liverpool? I don’t know. The only thing is, if you had wanted him, you would have got him now. Can they get him for free in twelve months’ time? I have no idea but for £20million-£25m he’d be available now if that was the case. I presume if Liverpool had wanted him they would have taken him.”

Tielemans’ situation is rather puzzling. As McManaman points out, Leicester are not exactly demanding a sizeable fee for the 25-year-old, considering his contract situation. Yet, every high-profile English club, including Liverpool, seem to be steering clear of him.

The midfielder did have a big dip in form last season, which may be part of the reason why teams are hesitant to pursue his signature. However, his low price would seemingly make it worth a gamble, especially due to the number of clubs who will be competing to sign him on a free next year.
