Alan Shearer Names The Three PL Opponents Who Cost Liverpool The Title

BBC pundit Alan Shearer believes Liverpool’s failure to win any of their games against Manchester City, Chelsea or Tottenham this season may have proven costly in the race for the league title.

The Reds missed out on top spot by a single point on the final day of the season, and Shearer believes that just one victory in one of those six fixtures against their top four rivals would have made the difference:

“One small thing you could say that they could have improved on is their record against the top four. Played six, they haven’t won any of their games, they didn’t lose any either, but that’s a tiny detail that they can look back on and say, ‘Those are the three teams not winning a game’.”

The point that Shearer is making does have some merit to it. However, there are other games where Liverpool dropped points which Jurgen Klopp’s side would probably regret more.

Being 2-0 up against Brighton at home and then going on to draw 2-2 does stick out as a major slip up, as well as the 3-3 draw against Brentford. As Shearer says himself, though, these are minor details and it would be churlish to nitpick considering the Reds ended the season on 92 points.
