Chelsea midfielder Jorginho has scored all eight of the penalties he had taken for the Blues before Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker saved his spot-kick in the 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The Italian international delays his run in order to see which way the goalkeeper dives before slotting it into the opposite corner. However, Alisson had been studying the Chelsea star’s technique and was determined to wait until the last minute before diving:

“I could see that he’d scored a lot of goals. He’s certainly a taker who’s an expert. It’s very difficult. The way he goes, he doesn’t have a defined corner, he waits for the goalkeeper until the end. And nowadays it’s not new, everyone studies. He probably studied me too, I studied him. But he has a way of hitting. I was happy to wait until the last second without taking a step.”

Alisson said his determination to save the penalty was fuelled by his inability to get a hand on any of Arsenal’s spot-kicks during the Community Shield final last month, which the Reds lost after Rhian Brewster’s crucial miss:

“We’ve been at the Community Shield, when the goalkeeper doesn’t save, it’s not something that takes away your confidence, but it’s something that makes you a little down. I knew I had to give an answer to my teammates on the pitch.”

A few pundits had begun to question Alisson’s form at the start of this season, after Leeds scored from all three of their shots on target in the season opener, but any critics would have been silenced as he kept his first clean sheet of the season.
