Arsene Wenger Raises Questions About Liverpool’s Decision To Make “Big Investment” Which “Hasn’t Worked Out”

Ex-Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Liverpool may already be regretting making a “big investment” in Darwin Nunez.

The Uruguayan, who was signed for an initial £64m, was on the bench as the Reds drew 3-3 with Brighton at the weekend, and Wenger claims Nunez’s absence from the starting eleven is a major concern, especially as the striker was meant to be a replacement for a key player in Sadio Mane:

“Nunez, at the moment, hasn’t worked out for them and they made a big investment. He’s sitting on the bench. They lost Mane, who was a top-level, big-game player. He had something (about him), an aggressive attitude and determination. He’d score no matter what happens, he’d make things happen. It’s difficult to measure how much (his departure) takes away. They miss something they had before.”

It should be pointed out that goalscoring isn’t necessarily Liverpool’s biggest problem at the moment. Their inability to keep clean sheets and their tendency to concede first, like they did against Brighton, is probably a much greater concern to manager Jurgen Klopp.

Saying that, though, Nunez’s continued absence from the starting lineup does suggest that the 23-year-old’s adaptation may take longer than many supporters would have hoped. We shall see if he does get a start against Rangers on Tuesday night.
