Can Liverpool Achieve A Top 4 Finish This Season?

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool currently sit in ninth position in the Premier League, behind the likes of Brighton, Brentford and Fulham. A top four finish looks like a pipe dream right now – but it’s not completely out of the question. Given their fixture list and form the question remains can Liverpool achieve a top 4 finish this season?

Liverpool’s form has been inconsistent this season, to say the least. With ten points between them and the team in fourth (Manchester United), they would need a strong run of wins – the Reds would also need to hope that the teams above them slip up.

It’s not impossible, but it is very unlikely at this stage of the season. If they finish in their current position, Liverpool will fail to qualify for any European competition that will take place next season.

As such, Jurgen Klopp’s Reds may be better served consolidating and recuperating for next season. One of Liverpool’s main issues is a lack of quality central midfielders – as Klopp has suggested that there are no plans for Liverpool to spend any additional money in the current transfer window, it does not appear that this issue will be fixed any time soon.

While the Reds have such an unbalanced, lethargic midfield, it’s difficult to see how they can make a serious top four charge. They may have to wait until the summer to iron out this problem – and when they do, they need to make sure they get it right.

Plenty of Liverpool’s key players, such as Fabinho, Trent-Alexander Arnold and Virgil Van Djik, have not been playing at the peak of their abilities this season. Competition for places could help them to refocus and recapture the form they displayed back in 2019,2020 and 2021, when at times the Reds looked unstoppable were a pleasure to watch in their dynamic attacking.

In answer to the initial question, chances of a top four finish seem very remote for Liverpool at this point. They should focus on the FA Cup for now. While they could go for broke, Klopp’s men will probably be better served waiting until next season to mount a serious challenge in the Premier League.

Crucially they have their FA Cup replay away Vs Wolves tonight and Klopp must select a strong XI as he needs a big result and a big performance.

Following Premier League games include Chelsea, Wolves (again), the Merseyside Derby vs Everton, the impressing Newcastle before the Champions League 1st leg Vs Real Madrid so the boss needs a reaction vs Wolves tonight to get some momentum ahead of these next run of massive fixtures.
