Liverpool secured their third victory of the season against Manchester City last night when they beat Pep Guardiola’s side 2-1 at The Etihad Stadium.
An early goal from Gabriel Jesus just two minutes in set the tempo for a thrilling affair, however City couldn’t capitalise on their dominance in the first half and were punished after the break.
Second half goals from first Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino sealed another memorable win for Jurgen Klopp’s side and sent them into the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in a decade.
Less than a week ago, the Reds humbled City at Anfield in the first-leg of the enthralling quarter-final tie, with strikes from Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sadio Mane enough all but end City’s hopes of a European and domestic treble.
And had it not been for Liverpool, Pep Guardiola’s side may have just gone the Premier League season unbeaten (ignoring their defeat to Manchester United at the weekend).
City travelled to Anfield in January at the time having not lost a top flight game, however left with their tails firmly between their legs after a 4-3 defeat at the hands of Klopp’s side.
It hasn’t all gone Liverpool’s way – the Reds lost 5-0 to Guardiola’s men in September last year – but winning three of their four games (and arguably the most important ones) against a side described by many as the ‘best in Europe’ isn’t bad going, infact, it’s terrific.
Liverpool haven’t enjoyed such success against any other club this season, so the question lies, “why can’t we play them every week?” …
We've now beaten City 3 times this season. Can we play them every week?
