Carragher Calls On Klopp To Start 6ft 5 Defender Against Sheffield United Despite Ajax Clean Sheet

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes Joel Matip needs to start against Sheffield United tomorrow due to the height he brings to the team.

The 29-year-old missed the 1-0 win over Ajax on Wednesday night as a precaution due to worries over a minor niggle but, despite the Reds keeping a clean sheet in the Netherlands, Carragher feels they need Matip in order to deal with the threat that the Blades pose from corners:

At 6ft 5, Matip certainly would offer more height than the likes of Fabinho and Joe Gomez, but after the pair played well in the Champions League, it would be a surprise if Klopp breaks them up.

The aerial presence from the likes of Blades striker Oli McBurnie will certainly cause the backline major problems, though, and without van Dijk being available, Klopp may feel that Matip’s inclusion will help nullify the Scottish international.

Matip hasn’t been declared fit yet, though, so we shall see what Klopp has to say at his pre-match press conference later today about the centre-half’s availability.
