Carragher Says Liverpool Would Be “Mad” To Make Bid Amid Claims Of Interest In £70m Rated Centre Back

Jamie Carragher has dismissed calls for Liverpool to sign a new centre-back this summer.

Reports have linked the Reds with a move for Ajax centre-half Matthijs de Ligt but the former defender thinks the Merseyside club already have a good number of players who can play the position:

“The form Matip’s been in, he’s been brilliant. At one stage three months ago I was thinking. ‘We need to buy a centre-back.’”

“You couldn’t trust [Dejan] Lovren or Gomez fitness-wise and Matip was the fourth choice and you’re thinking, ‘Is he good enough?’ But I think you’d be mad now to sign one.”

Reports in the UK suggest Manchester United have launched a £70m bid for de Ligt, while Manchester City and Barcelona are also said to be interested in the 19-year-old.

The defender has previously mentioned he would be keen to link up with Dutch international teammate, Virgil van Dijk, at club level but it doesn’t seem like a realistic possibility at the moment.

As Carragher mentions, Joel Matip’s excellent form and Joe Gomez’s huge potential would make a move for de Ligt low on the club’s priority list.

Especially as it has been reported that de Ligt’s agent Mino Raiola is demanding a £12m fee, with the player wanting £350,000 a week in wages.
