Cascarino Claims Liverpool Should Join Pursuit Of 21 Goal Striker Whose Skill “Echoes That Of Dennis Bergkamp”

Former Marseille and Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino believes Liverpool and other elite Premier League teams should be trying to sign Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

The 27-year-old has scored 21 goals in all competitions this season but Cascarino claims the forward’s superb ball control reminds him of Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp:

“I cannot believe Ivan Toney’s improvement technically over the past 18 months. He was one of the best players at Anfield The Brentford striker has added all sorts of deft touches to his game, such as the clever pass that assisted Bryan Mbeumo’s disallowed goal.”

“He has a finesse which, dare I say it, echoes that of Dennis Bergkamp. Toney’s subtlety complements his stature and finishing. Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United should all consider a move.”

To be honest, you can’t see the Reds pursuing Toney, despite the forward undoubtedly being a very talented player. You have to remember that Jurgen Klopp’s side have shelled out the best part of £130m on two forwards over the past twelve months so there isn’t really the need to make another addition upfront.

Most of the club’s resources this summer will be devoted to reinforcing the midfield. It should be pointed out that Liverpool have only signed one midfielder (Thiago) over the past five years, and with Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner all leaving at the end of the season, it is high time for an overhaul in that area of the pitch.
