Cascarino Recommends Liverpool Make Shock Swoop For Chelsea Ace Who “Can Do The Roberto Firmino Role”

Former Chelsea forward Tony Cascarino believes Liverpool should consider signing Olivier Giroud on a free transfer in the summer.

The Frenchman will be out of contract in June and Cascarino thinks the former Arsenal striker could do a job for the Reds in place of the misfiring Roberto Firmino:

“I think there’s very few who can do the Roberto Firmino role. At 35 years old, he’d do a great job. I still think there’s a year or two in him. He reminds me a little bit of Teddy Sheringham.”

It is a pretty leftfield recommendation from Cascarino, and it would be a massive surprise if Giroud was even being considered by the Reds’ recruitment team.

However, there is one possible scenario where the France World Cup winner could be considered as a target. A backup option may be needed if Divock Origi were to be sold in the summer.

Very recently, another veteran forward, Max Kruse, claimed that the Reds tried to sign him in 2019 before they opted to keep Origi. It shows, therefore, Liverpool are not averse to signing older players if the deal makes sense. Whether that would extend to offering Giroud a contract, though, it remains to be seen.
