David Ornstein Confirms Potential Trent Replacement With £30M Release Clause Is “Keen” On Liverpool Transfer

Bayer Leverkusen wingback Jeremie Frimpong is “keen” on joining Liverpool this summer, according to The Athletic‘s David Ornstein.

The reliable journalist says the Reds have not made a move for the Dutchman, who could come under consideration to replace the departing Trent Alexander-Arnold, but the player would be interested in a switch to Anfield if the opportunity arose:

“If they went for something different, something more multi-faceted, there are players potentially on the market like a Jeremie Frimpong of Bayer Leverkusen.”

“He has a €35m (£30m) release clause, something in the region of that, as I understand it. I also believe that he would be keen on a move to Liverpool if they decide to go down that route. They will have other options as well, but Frimpong has been mentioned in a number of reports so far.”

He is not the right fit for Liverpool

While , like Trent, Frimpong is a very attack-minded player, he isn’t really comfortable playing in a back four. He has thrived under Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen due to the Spaniard’s decision to play with wingbacks.

For that reason, it is not a complete surprise that Arne Slot’s side haven’t really been tempted to trigger his release clause, despite the fact that he is available for a pretty low price.

Frimpong does have other suitors in the Premier League

Manchester City are said to have seriously considered a move for the Netherlands international at the end of last season, with Pep Guardiola’s side looking at possible replacements for Kyle Walker.

Their rivals Manchester United have also kept close tabs on Frimpong in recent years. With the Red Devils now playing 5 at the back, the 24-year-old may come back onto their radar over the coming weeks.
