Eight Potential Premier League Free Agents

As we move towards the latter half of the Premier League season, clubs will be circling to see if they can snap up any players on free transfers when their contracts run out in the summer. Here we look at eight potential premier league free agents

Liverpool currently have four senior team players who will become free agents in the summer if their contracts are not renewed

Premier League free agents are always a hot topic – to receive a top-tier player for no charge is always seen as good business. First of all, let’s take a look at four players whose contracts are in the summer outside of Liverpool.

Youri Tielemans

Youri Tielemans possesses many of the same qualities that Liverpool’s Thiago does.

He’s excellent on the ball, has an eye for a pass and pops up with the occasional goal here and there.

He has been at the heart of Leicester City’s midfield since joining the club in 2019.

At just 25, he could be a great addition to Liverpool’s ageing midfield lineup yet he seems to be most strongly linked to joining Arsenal if the recent reports are to be believed.

Mathias Jensen

Brentford have been sensational so far in the current Premier League season. Mathias Jensen has been one of their standout stars, notching up four assists and scoring a single goal.

While Jensen is undoubtedly a player who would fit in at almost any Premier League team, he may not be a free agent in the summer.

Brentford have the option to extend Jensen’s contract for an additional year, but they have yet to activate the clause.

Caglar Soyuncu

Caglar Soyuncu is a skilled, physical, if somewhat erratic centre half. He’s been with Leicester since 2018 – at just 26, he has yet to reach his athletic prime.

Liverpool have plenty of talented defenders – this aside, Virgil Van Dijk isn’t getting any younger and Ibrahim Konate has underwhelmed recently.

Would you take a punt on the Turkish centre half who was once linked with joining Man United?

Adama Traore

Some may scoff at this suggestion – but, with Adama Traore’s freakish pace and power, one cannot help thinking how well-suited he would be to leading a Klopp-style counter attack down the flanks.

What Traore lacks in technical ability, he more than makes up for it with speed and strength on the ball but its his end product that seems to be his real achilles heel.

Liverpool already have an abundance of quality attacking players – it’s tricky to see where Traore would fit in amongst them. Nevertheless, he is a free agent in the summer and could prove to be a bargain if Wolves let him go.

With the potential future free agents that Liverpool could sign out of the way, let’s take a look at four Liverpool players whose contracts will run out in the summer.

Naby Keita

Naby Keita entered Liverpool with much fanfare back in 2018. Despite the hype, he never really lived up to the expectations placed upon him.

Keita’s contract runs out in the summer. He has scored seven times in 79 Premier League games for Liverpool – would you be sad to see the Guinean go?

You’d have to think a move to another club could be in his future as Jurgen Klopp just cannot rely on him.

Roberto Firmino

Seemingly usurped by the emergence of Darwin Nunez, Firmino has struggled somewhat for game time this season.

When given the chance, however, he has taken it – he’s scored seven goals and notched up three assists in 13 appearances this campaign.

As such, Firmino still appears as though he can offer something to Liverpool’s team. At 31, however, his best years are probably behind him at this point but he is a team player and Klopp likes him.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

When Oxlade-Chamberlain was a starlet at Arsenal, he looked to have the world at his feet.

Unfortunately, a horrific run of serious injuries and lapses in game time prevented him from achieving his true potential.

This season, he’s made just six appearances and has only scored a solitary goal. Could it be time for the Portsmouth-born midfielder to move on?

James Milner

James Milner has undoubtedly earned his place as one of the greatest players in Premier League history. As the most versatile player Liverpool have, across his career he’s been deployed in almost every position – as a lone striker, as a winger and as a full back, to name a few.

Sadly, Milner is now in the twilight of his decorated career. At 37 and with the quality of his performances dwindling, it could be time to say goodbye to the former Leeds United, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Manchester City man.

We’ll see if any of the players above sign pre-contract agreements with any teams as they are now able to negotiate with other clubs and it will be interesting to see if any of the clubs cash in the players this January rather lose them for nothing in the summer.
