Emre Can reveals what Klopp said to him following his exit from the club

Former Liverpool midfielder Emre Can has opened up about what Jurgen Klopp said to him when he revealed he would be leaving the club.

Can left the club under a bit of a cloud this summer on a free transfer, after refusing to sign a new deal with the club. It will have cost the Reds a huge transfer fee, and has left a sour taste in the mouths of many.

The Germany international signed a four-year-deal with Italian champions Juventus upon leaving Anfield, but he admits Klopp did not hold a grudge against him for leaving – saying he appreciates the way the manager saw out his contract.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Can said: “Not a lot of managers would let you play so many times when you are in the final year of your contract.

“My relationship with Klopp was always good. He wished me all the best when I told him I was leaving.

“But I always did my best. I always wanted to help the team.

“That is what he saw. That is why he kept faith with me.”

Liverpool have replaced Can with both Naby Keita and Fabinho this summer for a combined fee of just under £100m. The pair are both very adequate replacements and it will be interesting to see how well they settle in.
