Ex-Liverpool Star Linked With Surprise Return As Mignolet’s Replacement

Liverpool have weighed up a move for former goalkeeper Pepe Reina this summer, according to the Daily Telegraph.

As things stand, manager Jurgen Klopp is happy with retaining the services of Simon Mignolet as Alisson‘s understudy. Speaking ahead of the Merseyside club’s pre-season tour of the United States, the Reds boss said:

“I have had a lot of conversations with him in the last couple of years and months. We spoke before we left (for the summer break). It is because at a club like Liverpool you need two number ones, at least, in the club. That’s cool with Ali and Simon. A good situation for the club and a situation you should have. Everything is fine from my point of view.”

However, Mignolet is not necessarily as happy with the situation as Klopp. The Belgian has been widely praised for his attitude following Alisson’s arrival from Roma last summer, but the 31-year-old has ambitions of playing more regularly again.

Reina is currently at AC Milan where he is currently the club’s number two behind Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Spaniard is now 36 years of age and is likely to be keen to return to one of his former clubs.

The strength of Mignolet’s desire to leave, though, will likely play a deciding factor in whether Liverpool make a move for another goalkeeper.
