The Guardian journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that “talks are going to restart soon” between Liverpool and Bayern Munich about signing Thiago Alcantara.
The Reds are adamant that they won’t pay €30m (£27m) for the 29-year-old but it does seem as though that more discussions will take place in order to see whether a compromise can be agreed:
Rummenigge has confirmed today that “we still hope to keep David Alaba at Bayern Münich. We’re working on it”.
No comment abt Thiago – but Bayern will be in touch again soon with Liverpool. #LFC don’t want to pay €30M price tag but talks are going to restart soon. ? #transfers— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) August 27, 2020
Thiago’s age and profile would not typically make him a target for Liverpool but his talent and his apparent interest in moving to Anfield may lead to the Premier League champions making an exception in this case.
With the Spanish international’s current deal expiring next summer, the Reds could wait until January so he can sign a pre-contract agreement, but that would risk other teams, like Arsenal, getting involved in the battle to sign the player.
Bayern are not under pressure financially to sell Thiago but they would probably prefer to offload him now rather than lose him for nothing next year.
