FIVE PL Clubs Who Came Away As Losers From The Summer Transfer Window

Anfield Stadium

With the transfer window having closed on Tuesday night, we have decided to look at the Premier League clubs who came out winners and losers from their summer business.

It’s probably slightly unfair to make sweeping judgements so early on, considering many of the players signed by teams could go on to have successful seasons.

Nonetheless, there are certain teams whose poor business in the transfer market could come back to haunt them later in the campaign.

Press the next page as we name the five biggest losers from the summer transfer window.

5) Wolves

The Midlands club arguably downgraded by replacing Rui Patricio with Jose Sa in goal. The rest of their summer recruitment has also been modest by their previous standards.

They will, however, be pleased that they managed to keep hold of some of their key players such as Ruben Neves and Adama Traore.

4) Liverpool

Many Liverpool fans believe that the Reds should have, at least, brought in another forward this summer. Others also felt a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum was needed.

The Reds haven’t sold as many players as they would have liked either, with Nat Phillips and Divock Origi both staying put. Their only summer signing, Ibrahima Konate, has yet to be given his competitive debut by manager Jurgen Klopp.

3) Southampton

The Saints have sold arguably two of their three best players this summer, in Danny Ings (Aston Villa) and Jan Vestergaard (Leicester), and it remains to be seen whether their replacements are suitable.

New signing Adam Armstrong did, however, score on his debut against Everton, but Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have yet to win so far this season.

2) Newcastle United

The Magpies only made one significant addition (signing Joe Willock on a permanent basis from Arsenal), and they failed to address some significant weaknesses in the squad.

Steve Bruce’s side tried to snap up Marseille’s Boubacar Kamara and Leicester’s Hamza Choudhury, only for the club’s hierarchy to block the latter’s arrival after refusing to pay a loan fee.

1) Arsenal

Paying £142m on mostly unproven talent is a massive risk, which could well cost Mikel Arteta his job. While many thought that Ben White was a good defender, the £50m outlay was seen as excessive.

It was a similar case in terms of Martin Odegaard and Aaron Ramsdale, who cost a combined £54m. The Gunners’ outgoings were just as disappointing, with the club unable to shift any deadwood. They have loaned Hector Bellerin to Real Betis for free, and the only money that was brought in was from Willock’s move to Newcastle.
