Former Arsenal Star Predicts Whether Thiago Will Be A Success At Liverpool

Former Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker expects Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara to adapt quickly to the Premier League if he moves to Liverpool this summer.

The Spanish international has been heavily linked with a switch to Anfield, although there is no agreement to sign the player at this stage. Mertesacker doesn’t think, though, the 29-year-old would need long to find his feet in English football:

“I can already imagine the transfer, but the midfield axis of Liverpool is set up. Getting in there is very ambitious, but he’s a top footballer who can play anywhere. He wouldn’t have any problems with the style of play in England either because he’s a footballer who has been coached well.”

“He has to adapt and sometimes do a 40-metre sprint to hit a central defender, but he can. He has to decide for himself, as it may well be that he won’t play a major role in the first games in Liverpool. There are still a few players ahead of him because of their achievements over the past two years.”

There is a sharp contrast between some local journalists who believe Liverpool are not interested in Thiago, with those on the continent who insist the Reds are keen on snapping the player up.

Bayern are reportedly demanding at least €30m (£27m) for the Spaniard, and it is thought that they would have to lower their asking price for the Premier League champions to consider making a move for the midfielder.

Mertesacker’s comments, though, do show how highly Thiago is rated in the game, and it would be a massive coup if he did seal a move to Merseyside this summer.
