Former Liverpool star urges Reds to move for AC Milan superstar

Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has urged the Reds to make a move for AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma this summer.

Nicol believes that his former side’s options between the sticks remain a problem, and they should invest in a world class keeper in the summer if they want to challenge for the Premier League next season.

Loris Karius has established himself as Liverpool’s first choice keeper at Anfield after a difficult first season with the club.

Jurgen Klopp is understood to be extremely pleased with Karius’ performances since the turn of the year – so much so that he called off a move for AS Roma keeper Alisson, who was widely expected to join the club this summer.

It will remain a question throughout the summer transfer window and if you feel like betting on whether Liverpool sign Alisson why not use a ladbrokes promo code to get the best value when you do bet.

However despite Karius’ good form, Nicol believes his former side still need to invest in a new goalkeeper come the end of the season.

“I think Liverpool should go and see if they can either get a No 1 or have somebody who’s on a level with Karius because Mignolet isn’t,” Nicol told ESPN FC.

“Liverpool’s problems were always the defensive unit – and by that, more importantly, the centre-back position and the goalkeeper.

“They’ve certainly made a difference signing (Virgil) van Dijk at that centre back position, and Karius, as good as a last couple of months as he’s had, are we really 100% relying on him? I’m not ready for that yet.”

And one man in particular has stood out for Nicol who he believes Liverpool should do all they can to sign.

“I wouldn’t have a problem if they could get the likes of a Donnarumma, who could be the goalkeeper for the next decade.” he continued.

“I think, definitely, it’s a priority now for Liverpool. It’s a weak spot. Again, as good as Karius has been recently, he’s not the finished article by a long way.”
