Fowler Explains Why Klopp Opted To Take Up Liverpool Job Ahead Of United

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler says that Jurgen Klopp decided against becoming Manchester United manager before being appointed the head coach at Anfield.

The German was still at Borussia Dortmund when he was reportedly contacted by the Red Devils, as well as Real Madrid, but it seems their focus on money over identity put the manager off making the move:

“I did an interview with him a couple of years ago and he told me he turned down a couple of super-rich clubs after (Borussia) Dortmund – one of them was definitely Manchester United, the other probably Real Madrid – because he hated how they were focused solely on commercial influences.”

“He said he liked Liverpool because they had a balance between the money needed to reach the top and the history and identity of the club and their fans.”

Fans will, no doubt, be glad that Klopp rejected approaches from the likes of United before moving to Anfield. He left Dortmund at the end of the 2014/15 campaign before taking up his current role in October 2015.

Four years into his reign, and the German has already cemented a place in the club’s history by becoming only the fourth manager to lift the Champions League after Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan and Rafa Benitez.

With Liverpool now eight points clear at the top of the Premier League, Klopp will now have his sights on his first league title at the club.
