FPL: Three Liverpool Players To AVOID In Your Fantasy Football Premier League Team 2023/24

Thiago Alcantara playing for Liverpool.

With the Premier League season fast approaching, FPL players across the country – including fans of Liverpool – are working hard to put the finishing touches on their squads.

Today, we’ll be listing three Liverpool players we feel you should avoid – whether it be due to their high respective costs or limited points output.

If you’d like to see the inverse of this list, you can check out our list on Liverpool players who we feel would be great additions to your fantasy football squad.

For the purposes of this list, we’ll be looking at facts and figures from the official Premier League website’s fantasy football game.

Joel Matip

First up is Joel Matip – while he was an integral (and often understated) cog in Jurgen Klopp’s 2019/20 machine, he has become less important to the squad in recent seasons.

While the Cameroonian centre-half is a perfectly serviceable player, he is struggling to cope with Liverpool’s high line tactics as his career reaches its twilight.

On top of this, at £5.0, he is not cheap for a defender. Hold tight, however – Matip isn’t the only Liverpool defender you’ll be seeing on this list.

Cody Gakpo

Again, here is another player we feel somewhat guilty for including in a list such as this. Cody Gakpo began to pick up steam towards the end of last season, but this doesn’t mean there aren’t better options out there.

Gakpo scored seven goals, alongside three assists in the Premier League last season. These are respectable numbers, especially considering that he joined Liverpool in January.

At £7.5, however, it is difficult to justify his inclusion. Moreover, it is also unclear as to how much game time he will get next season – Klopp, presently, seems to prefer Darwin Nunez in the striker role.

Virgil Van Dijk

Virgil Van Dijk’s fall from grace has been heartbreaking to see. He is still a general at the back, but his once-pinpoint defensive positioning has dwindled in recent seasons.

Like Matip, Van Dijk simply seems to be too old to cope with Liverpool’s intense pressing now. Their backline had looked impervious in recent seasons – now, it is quite easily breachable.

What really puts the cherry on top is Van Dijk’s extortionate FPL price on the official Premier League website. This season, he will cost you £6.0, making him the joint-third most expensive defender in the game.
