Gary Lineker Makes His Feelings Known About Firmino’s Offside Goal

Former England striker Gary Lineker is not happy with how VAR makes decisions on offsides. Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino had a goal ruled out in the 2-1 win over Aston Villa yesterday, but taking to Twitter following the incident, the TV presenter said he believes the technology is not fit for purpose:

The Premier League explained that Firmino’s armpit was ahead of the last defender Tyrone Mings, but the angle and frame that was measured appears to show that the striker was in line.

In any case, Liverpool did go on to win the match, but only after two later goals from Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane. The Reds will be hoping they will have some marginal offside calls go their way in the future, but with VAR it does seem that the measurements used are pretty circumspect.

Whether this issue will be addressed with improved tracking technology in the future, we shall have to wait and see.
