Gary Neville hails impact of Liverpool summer signing after his terrific start to the season

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has hailed the impact of Liverpool summer signing Alisson after the Reds fantastic start to the season continued against Brighton on Saturday afternoon.

Jurgen Klopp’s side beat the Seagulls 1-0 at Anfield thanks to a solitary Mo Salah goal, with the victory leaving them top of the table having now won all three of the Premier League games so far.

The Reds, whose defensive frailties ultimately let them down last season, have also yet to concede a goal in the top flight, a feat unmatched by any other side in the division.

Klopp had previously spoken of keeping his faith in goalkeeping duo Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet this season despite disappointing previous campaigns for the pair, but the German changed his mind late in the summer.

Alisson arrived at Anfield as a world record £67 million signing from AS Roma in the summer, and Neville believes the Brazil number one has thus far proven to be worth every penny, and that Jurgen Klopp made the right decision in splashing the cash for his services.

He said: “At the end of last season when Jurgen Klopp said he was going to keep faith with the two goalkeepers he had, I thought it was strange.

“I didn’t see how that could happen if Liverpool were going to genuinely challenge for the title.

“I watched Alisson and he looked good with his feet, though a few things came off him from parrying.

“He passed his first test against Crystal Palace and I’m not necessarily looking forward to watching him, but I chose him in terms of answering the questions that need to be answered in a new league.”

Alisson’s impact on merseyside has also been praised by team-mate Andy Robertson.

The flying Scotsman said of Liverpool’s new number one: “He’s been brilliant since he came in.

“It’s no disrespect to Loz [Loris Karius] or Si [Mignolet], but he’s been brilliant since he came in and I’m sure the lads said the same with the other ‘keepers when they first came in.

“He’s a real presence at the back, you can see him coming out for corners and crosses and you’ve seen his wee chip got applause from the crowd, but I’m not sure if the gaffer wants to see that too many times!

“But fair play to him and that’s the confidence he’s playing with and it breeds onto the defence. When we needed him he came alive and palmed it away.

“Fair play to him so far, he’ll be delighted with three clean sheets and long may it continue.”

Liverpool are next in action against Leicester on September 1.
