Glen Johnson Believes Liverpool Could Damage United’s Transfer Plans By Hijacking Deal For Brazilian Ace

Ex-Liverpool defender Glen Johnson believes the Reds could “impact” Manchester United’s summer recruitment plans if they manage to secure the signing of Ajax winger Antony ahead of their fierce rivals.

Reports in the Brazilian media have suggested that Jurgen Klopp’s side have enquired about the 22-year-old and Johnson claims that, even though United don’t necessarily need another winger, it would still damage Erik ten Hag’s rebuild if Antony were to make the move to Anfield:

“There is the chance for Liverpool to get one over a rival, but I don’t even think he’s the type of player that Manchester United need right now. They’ve got a couple of top wingers who just aren’t performing. I don’t think Manchester United will challenge for the title, but Liverpool could still impact them if they get Antony.”

To be honest, it would be a big surprise if Liverpool do make a bid for Antony. Even though the Merseyside club have kept tabs on the player for many years, the cost of the transfer is likely to be very high.

Respected journalists in the Netherlands have reported that Ajax are determined to keep hold of the Brazilian, and the Dutch club have now increased their price tag from €80m (£67m) to €100m (£84m) to ward off potential suitors. For that price. there is no chance whatsoever that Liverpool will get involved.
