Glen Johnson Tells Liverpool To Overlook Bellingham And Pursue Key Chelsea Target Instead

Ex-Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson believes West Ham midfielder Declan Rice is the player that the Reds should be targeting for the summer of 2023.

It has been widely reported that Jurgen Klopp’s side will delay their plans to strengthen in the middle of the park until next year. Up until now, it has been assumed that Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham is the no.1 priority but Johnson thinks Rice would be the best option, as he could be a long-term replacement for captain Jordan Henderson:

“Right now, I’d go for Declan Rice. In a couple of years’ time, Jordan Henderson could do what Sadio Mané has done and leave, I think that Declan would fit that role perfectly.”

Rice is said to be a target for the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United but West Ham’s £150m asking price has put off clubs from making an offer for the 23-year-old. Considering that Dortmund are reportedly demanding around €120m (£103m) for Bellingham, both players are likely to break Liverpool’s transfer record.

Out of the two, Rice has more experience, particularly in the Premier League, but Bellingham is more attack-minded and many believe that he could go on to reach greater heights than his England international teammate.
