‘He Could Be Fabulous’ Souness Excited By Liverpool Player’s Potential

Former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness says the sky really is the limit for Reds defender Joe Gomez.

The England international is only 22 years of age but has already won a number of trophies during his short career. Souness feels he has the potential to become a first-team regular at Anfield for many years to come if he stays clear of injuries:

“Well providing he can avoid injuries, he could be fabulous. He’s already achieved so much at 22 years old and the manager trusts him.”

“When a centre-back comes into the team, a lot of them start as full-backs because when you make a mistake at full-back your centre-back can possibly cover for you.”

“If you make a mistake at centre-back, it duly leads to an effort at goal. So it’s onwards and upwards for him, providing he can avoid any serious injuries, he could be around for a very long time.”

Gomez has already sustained a serious knee injury and a fractured leg over the past few seasons, and it has led to some speculating he could be prone to fitness problems.

However, he has been almost completely free of injury this campaign, and he has once again established himself as Virgil van Dijk’s partner in the centre of defence.

There were some question marks over his form earlier in the season, leading to manager Jurgen Klopp to bench him for a number of games but, since the beginning of December, he has been ever-present for the Reds.
