Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville says he has been left flummoxed by Liverpool’s woeful form so far this season.

The former Manchester United defender was backing the Reds to finish in the top two once again, but he can’t even see them making it into the top four after their latest defeat to Leeds:

“Everyone just imagined that Manchester City and Liverpool would be clear again. I don’t think anyone could have foreseen what’s happening at Liverpool right now, I certainly didn’t. I thought they were bankers to finish first or second, now they’ve got a battle just to get the top four. Right now Man United look better than Liverpool, that’s obvious. There’s more questions than answers at Liverpool. I don’t think they will get top four now.”

Most Liverpool supporters are just as perplexed as Neville, to be honest with you. Nobody really saw this coming at the start of this campaign. The Merseysiders are now eight points off Newcastle in fourth after just twelve matches.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has said on more than one occasion that the break for the World Cup could be a chance for a reset, but really, you have to ask if much will actually change.

Yes, a few players (including Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota) will come back from injury but the main issue is the midfield and that will have to be addressed in the transfer market. With Liverpool’s owners FSG usually very reluctant to do transfer business midseason, we shall see if they make an exception in January.
