Ex-Liverpool defender Jose Enrique says he has previously “recommended” that his former club sign Alexander Isak.

The Swedish international completed a £60m switch to Newcastle last week, and he put in an impressive performance by scoring on his debut against the Reds in the Magpies’ 2-1 defeat at Anfield on Wednesday night. Speaking about the forward, Enrique said:

“Isak is a player I really like and I recommended him to Liverpool last year. He suits the profile of what Newcastle need right now.”

Isak has been linked with a whole host of Premier League clubs in the past, including Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea, but his poor form for Real Sociedad last season is said to have put off many of his suitors.

The 22-year-old’s high asking price was also seen as problematic so Newcastle were taking a gamble by breaking their transfer record for the striker. Based on his first appearance, it seems like they may be proven right to splash out on him but we shall see how he performs over the long term.
