Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville does not expect Liverpool to finish in the top four after their disappointing start to the season.
The Reds have won just two of their opening eight matches and, while Neville does preface his remarks by saying things could change after the World Cup, he feels Jurgen Klopp’s side won’t qualify for the Champions League:
“I don’t think Liverpool will finish in the top four… but this season is a marathon more than most, and the momentum will keep swinging back and forward – the Queen’s passing, the World Cup – it’s a disrupted season. Nothing has really got started yet, and coming back from the World Cup everything could be completely different.”
Unsurprisingly, supporters on Twitter weren’t particularly pleased with Neville’s comments with many hoping that he will be eating his words come May:

It’s a battle between Utd Spurs, Newcastle and Liverpool for 4th. Think Chelsea and Arsenal will be 2nd and 3rd. Long way to go, and as always injuries will determine who finishes where

Didn't people say that 2 years ago when the defence was all injured and still finished third?

I don't believe That, we just need to get a new player and keep fighting

Gonna be the same as the “United will win the league before Liverpool” shout this

Despite the 7-1 win against Rangers in their last match, Liverpool’s league performances have been concerning. Arsenal are already 14 points ahead of them, with Manchester City, Tottenham, Chelsea and even United also leaving the Reds trailing in their wake.
While the result at Ibrox was welcome, getting something from the game against City this weekend is even more important. Stopping the rot and creating a foundation so they can move forward is absolutely vital.
