Ian Wright Lists Four Reasons Why Reece James Is Keeping Trent Alexander Arnold Out Of The England Team

Ian Wright believes Liverpool fullback Trent Alexander-Arnold has it all to do to dislodge Chelsea’s Reece James from Gareth Southgate’s first-choice starting lineup.

Alexander-Arnold replaced James in the second half of England’s 5-0 win over Albania on Friday night, but Wright has listed four key attributes that will likely keep James ahead of his international teammate:

“He’s keeping someone like Trent Alexander-Arnold out, who is a fantastic player himself. He’s got everything. His delivery is amazing, his closing down. He’s got the ability and strength to progress the ball, he’s so combative. He’s a super player.”

It must be said that James is in the form of his life at the moment, and it is not much of a surprise to see Southgate pick the 21-year-old ahead of Alexander-Arnold, particularly after previous incidents where the Liverpool star has been left out of the squad entirely.

Reds fans may be slightly miffed that James is getting the nod for his country ahead of their star man but, to be honest, most supporters won’t care if he doesn’t play a single minute against San Marino tomorrow, as it would ensure his fitness ahead of Liverpool’s next match against Arsenal.
