James Pearce Confirms Discussions About Prospective Left Back Signing But Transfer Depends On One Condition

The Athletic‘s Liverpool correspondent James Pearce has revealed that manager Jurgen Klopp has discussed signing a new left-back with his assistants ahead of next season.

The Reds did not replace Alberto Moreno when he left Anfield for Villarreal last summer, leaving James Milner as the only backup option for Andy Robertson.

However, Pearce says the club will only make a signing in that area if they feel that youngster Yasser Larouci isn’t up to the task:

“To a large extent it depends on whether Klopp has sufficient faith in Larouci to step up next season.”

Following the 0-0 draw against Everton yesterday, it seems pretty clear that an understudy of some sort will be needed for Robertson.

The Scot’s absence was keenly felt with both James Milner and Joe Gomez having to fill in with the first choice left-back currently sidelined with injury.

Neither player did a bad job but they are playing out of position, and neither can provide the width and the dynamism which Robertson brings to the table.
