Van Dijk was scythed down in the penalty box by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford but the Dutchman was offside and no punishment was meted out to the England international.
The defender was substituted following the incident and he was sent to a local hospital for a scan. He was later seen departing on crutches with the Reds now fearing that he could be out for an extended period.
After meeting with a consultant today, van Dijk will know more about the timeframe for his expected recovery but things don’t look too promising at this stage.
There is, however, more optimism in regards to Thiago Alcantara’s knee injury. The Spaniard picked up the issue following a challenge by Richarlison, who was sent off after making the tackle.
