Jamie Carragher backs summer signing to become a top player for Liverpool

Jamie Carragher has backed Xherdan Shaqiri to become a top player for Liverpool.

The Switzerland international joined the Reds from relegated Stoke City this summer in a £13 million deal.

While the 26-year-old enjoyed an hugely positive pre-season campaign however, he is yet to make his first competitive start for the club having been named on the bench for all four of Liverpool’s Premier League games so far.

The former Inter Milan and Bayern Munich forward came off the bench in games against West Ham and Leicester.

Shaqiri starred for his country in the 1-0 defeat to England on Tuesday night – a game Carragher was on-hand to watch – and the Liverpool legend was full of praise for Swiss forward after the clash at the King Power Stadium.

Speaking to Sky Sports on Tuesday night, Carragher said: “I think it’s a brilliant buy for Liverpool.

“He’s been around a long time at big clubs and has great experience.

“You look at the price tag, his age as well, he will (make an impact). He made an impact at Leicester when he came on.

“It’s one of those buys where even if it doesn’t work out, there’s no way they’re not going to get their money back. So I think it works for everyone really.”

Liverpool return to Premier League action on Saturday lunchtime when they travel to Tottenham Hotspur, where Jurgen Klopp’s men will be looking to make it five wins out of five in the top flight this season.
