Journalist Reveals Liverpool Have Made ‘Contact’ With £35m Rated French Midfield Maestro

The Times journalist Duncan Castles has confirmed that Liverpool are very interested in Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare.

Reports in Spain last week had indicated that the Reds were keen on the 21-year-old, along with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Newcastle and Real Madrid. Speaking on the Transfer Window podcast, Castles said the Merseyside club had been talking to the player’s agent:

“I’m also told that of the many other clubs interested in Soumare, Liverpool are one of those clubs. They’ve been watching the player I’m told for two years now and rate him highly, have been in contact with the player’s representatives to do their due diligence.”

“Liverpool are probably one of the best clubs in the English transfer market in terms of assessing not just a player’s ability on the field but their qualities as an individual and how they would fit into a squad if they were to sign him.”

Newcastle could, however, be Liverpool’s biggest rival for Soumare. The Magpies reportedly tabled an offer in January for the Frenchman, and they have now returned with a €40m (£35m) bid.

Lille may not be able to resist such an offer as the Ligue One side were believed to be in financial difficulties even before the outbreak forced the postponement of football fixtures.

Even so, whether the midfielder would be interested in a move to St James’ Park, it remains to be seen, but it looks as though there will be big competition for the France Under 21 international when the transfer window reopens.
