Jurgen Klopp gets one up on Jose Mourinho with latest Xherdan Shaqiri revelation

Jose Mourinho wanted to bring Xherdan Shaqiri to Manchester United this summer, however was beaten to the forward’s signature by Liverpool.

Shaqiri was free to leave Stoke City during the summer after their relegation from the Premier League, and Mourinho was reportedly one of a number of interested parties in the former Bayern Munich and Inter Milan star.

However, the Portuguese boss failed to make his move and was subsequently beaten to the Swiss international’s signature by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Southampton and West Ham were among the other clubs looking to sign him.

Klopp made Shaqiri his third signing of the summer earlier this month when he triggered the £13 million release clause in the 26-year-old’s contract at Stoke.

Shaqiri had an excellent end to pre-season with the Reds – including scoring a brilliant over-head kick in a 4-1 win over Manchester United – and made his competitive debut in Liverpool’s 4-0 win over West Ham on Sunday afternoon.
