Keane Names The Liverpool Star He Is A “Big Fan” Of And Labels Him “Better” Than United Treble Winner

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane says he rates Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk very highly. Comparing him to his former Dutch teammate Jaap Stam, the Irishman said the Reds defender is better in possession than the treble winner:

“I’m a big fan on Van Dijk. The guy’s a machine. He’s probably a little better on the ball than Stam.”

The ex-United star generally doesn’t give out much praise for players, particularly if they play for Liverpool, but even he can’t hide his admiration for van Dijk.

The 28-year-old has been a key player since he moved to Anfield from Southampton two years ago. In the past two seasons, he has only been on the losing side once in the Premier League, which tells you all you need to know about the Netherlands international.

Of course, van Dijk isn’t the only reason for the Reds’ superb defensive record, with the likes of Alisson and Joe Gomez also playing a crucial role.

However, without the Dutch star, it is fair to say that Jurgen Klopp’s side would have achieved a lot less success over the past few years.
