Klopp aiming for silverware next season but warns it won’t be easy

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists he is committed to winning trophies at the club next season, but admits it will not come easy with the strict competition they face.

The Reds have been one of the Premier League’s biggest spenders so far this summer, and have spent nearly £250m over the past 12 months.

They invested in the most expensive goalkeeper in history when they signed Brazil international Alisson from Roma earlier this month, Naby Keita for a further £50m, Fabinho for £40m and Xherdan Shaqiri for £13m – and that’s not to mention the £75m they spent making Virgil van Dijk the world’s most expensive defender in January.

However, despite the vast amounts spent by the Reds, they have not won a trophy since the 2012 League Cup – something Klopp is hoping to change.

“I know about the expectations and that is completely normal,” said the German.

“We have the highest ambitions – 100%.

“People will say that [Liverpool need to win trophies]. It is the next step and we need to be ready for that.

“I cannot give guarantees here but I understand if people think that.

“First of all, we have to play the football that gives us an opportunity to win something. We cannot talk about winning something before we start the season.”

Liverpool have had poor luck in finals since Klopp took over, losing the League Cup and Europa League finals in his first season in charge, then more recently losing in last season’s Champions League final.

The Reds have also endured fairly poor Premier League finishes, coming eighth, fourth and fourth under the German. However, Klopp says he is confident the team can build on last season.

“I am confident we can build on last season,” he added.

“The football the boys played last year was not easy. There was a lot of work invested into playing like that. That’s what we will do again. I am not in doubt about our basis or that we will reach it again.”
