Klopp defends Arsenal and City stars after criticism

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has defended German duo Mesut Ozil and Ilkay Gundogan after the pair both came under harsh criticism in the wake of Germany’s woeful World Cup campaign.

The holders shockingly crashed out in the group stage, finishing bottom of their group after defeats to Mexico and South Korea. City and Arsenal stars Ilkay Gundogan and Mesut Ozil have bared the brunt of the criticism since, with many even calling for the pair to be axed from Germany’s squad for good.

It comes after they were photographed with Turkish president Recep Erdogan just before the World Cup, something which many say was a distraction to the team.

However, Klopp has rubbished claims that the two should step down from international duty with Germany, saying people should ‘shut up and not question the boys.’

Speaking to Bild, Klopp said: “The intelligent people of this country demand tolerance. And the others should shut up and not question the boys.

“Older, more experienced people should have helped them there. We should not forget that the two of them have Turkish roots even though they grew up here in Germany. But it is the same as always: the one who cries the loudest is the one heard the most. But that’s never been my thing.”

The Liverpool boss also backed the decision for Germany manager Joachim Low to remain in charge, saying: “I think that’s the absolutely right decision.”
