Klopp Eyeing 13 Cap Uruguayan International As Surprise Lovren Replacement

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is interested in bringing Espanyol centre-back Leandro Cabrera to the club, according to reports in the Spanish media.

There were claims over the weekend that the Reds could look to take the 29-year-old on loan next season, with Espanyol keen on removing the Uruguayan international from their wage bill after their relegation.

Cabrera only moved from Getafe in January but he is currently earning €3m a season, which is a hefty figure for a team playing in the second tier of Spanish football.

With that being the case, Espanyol would be open to another team paying his wages in full and Liverpool would have no trouble paying his salary.

The Merseyside club’s interest is likely down to the expected departure of Dejan Lovren. At his press conference today, Klopp said the Croatian remained an important player but there are multiple reports suggesting the defender is keen on leaving in order to get more first-team football.

With Liverpool being financially cautious during the global health crisis, a surprise move for Cabrera could well be on the cards.
