Klopp Hints At Possible Surprise Liverpool Strike Pairing Against Southampton

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Roberto Firmino is fit to start against Southampton this afternoon.

The Brazilian has been suffering with an eye injury but he came off the bench to score the winner against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

His replacement in the side Daniel Sturridge scored the opening goal on the night and speaking at his pre-match press conference yesterday, the Reds boss said he wouldn’t be against picking both players in the starting lineup:

“The impact Daniel had [against PSG] was only positive. Intense game, it was all good, fantastic game. Could they play together [alongside Firmino]? Yes, of course.”

Many believe the match against the Saints will be the game where Klopp rotates his squad. Liverpool have back-to-back games against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup and the league, followed by matches against Napoli and Manchester City.

Whether that will lead to either Sadio Mane or Mo Salah being rested, we shall see. Summer signing Xherdan Shaqiri would be the likeliest replacement if either player were to drop out of the starting eleven, but Klopp may spring a surprise or two in his team selection for today’s game.
