Klopp to spend 80m+ on a new goalkeeper this summer, says finance expert

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has warned Jurgen Klopp that Liverpool need to spend big on a new No.1 if they are to contend for the Premier League title next season.

The Reds are known to be in the market for a new stopper this summer, after goalkeeper Loris Karius’ woeful performance in the Champions League final last month, and many big money signings have been touted for a move to Anfield.

Maguire, who is a specialist in football finance and often appears on BBC and Sky Sports, says Jurgen Klopp is set to have a £200m transfer war chest this summer and should set about spending a large chunk of that on a new ‘keeper.

He told Starsport: “The most important thing for Liverpool was that they qualify for Champions League football and they managed to achieve that.

“We’ve already seen that they struck early in the transfer window, so they’ve already spent about £80m and the good thing for Klopp is that he can easily spend that again.

“He will be backed by the board because of the money he has made them through [Philippe] Coutinho and the Champions League final.

“You don’t want to kick a man when he’s down, but we all know where they need to improve.

“If they want a serious attempt at the Premier League this season they need a new goalkeeper that can earn them 10-12 points a season like David De Gea does for [Manchester] United.”
