Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is unlikely to be pleased with the announcement that the Reds will be involved in a European Super League.

Just two years ago, the German was asked about the potential creation of the competition, and he made it clear he would not want to be part of it:

“I hope this Super League will never happen. With the way the Champions League is now running, football has a great product, even with the Europa League. For me, the Champions League is the Super League, in which you do not always end up playing against the same teams.”

“Of course, it is [financially] important, but why should we create a system where Liverpool faces Real Madrid for 10 straight years? Who wants to see that every year?”

Whether Klopp has changed his opinion since then, it isn’t known. It would be a surprise if the German hadn’t been consulted by Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) before the decision was made, but even if he was, it doesn’t mean his opinion was listened to.

At this stage, Liverpool have not signed a contract to play in the tournament. It is a similar case for all the other Premier League teams involved, including Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham.

Most fans will be hoping that the plans are simply brinkmanship as they look to negotiate with UEFA over the revamp of the Champions League.
