Liverpool and Manchester United target speaks out over speculation

Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman has opened up about speculation linking him with a move away from Italy.

The 28-year-old has always been a target of Manchester United’s, and despite the Red Devils being close to completing a deal for Fred, it is believed that Mourinho is still keeping his tabs on the Dutchman as a potential replacement for Michael Carrick.

Liverpool are also heavily linked with Strootman, with Klopp continuing to bolster his midfield ahead of the new season. The Merseyside club have already signed Fabinho and Keita this summer, and it looks as if they’re not stopping there.

The two bitter rivals looked set to lock horns over the midfielder’s signature, but speaking in an interview after Holland’s 1-1 draw with Italy on Monday, Strootman put the rumours to bed by insisting he is happy with Roma.

“I am only going to talk about the national team. I have a contract and I haven’t signed for anyone else,” he said.

“I am happy at Roma and that’s enough.”

The news will serve as a bit of a blow for Liverpool, who were said to be willing to activate his 45m euro release clause. However, with Klopp’s side already bulging with central midfield talent, perhaps it is more Manchester United’s loss.
