Liverpool And United Both Target Upamecano As Surprisingly Low Release Clause Is Revealed

Liverpool and Manchester United are both eyeing a deal for RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano next summer, according to reports in the German media.

The 21-year-old signed a new contract with his current club back in July but a new release clause was inserted that means he can leave for €40m (£36m) at the end of the 2020/21 season.

Upamecano has been linked with a huge number of teams over the past year, with clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea having also taken a keen interest in the Frenchman’s development.

It does appear that the Reds will be in a market for a new centre-back soon. The Premier League champions did not replace Dejan Lovren and have gone into this campaign with just three senior centre-halves in Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

Due to Matip’s injury problems and Gomez’s poor form, a new partner for van Dijk is likely being sought by the club’s recruitment team, and it seems Upamecano is one of the candidates.
