Liverpool Attempt To See Off United In Race For £18m Rated Portuguese U19 International

Liverpool are interested in signing Sporting Lisbon left-back Nuno Mendes, according to Abola. The Portuguese newspaper claims the Reds are looking to head off a challenge from Manchester United to seal the 17-year-old’s signature.

It is believed that agent Miguel Pinho’s good relationship with United, following the deal that saw Bruno Fernandes move to Old Trafford, could sway things in their favour, but Liverpool are said to be the ones who are prepared to place a formal bid on the table.

It is believed that the Reds will make their move for Mendes “very soon” with Abola reporting that there are two proposals being considered. A €15m (£13.5m) offer with a sell-on clause, or a €20m (£18m) offer without one.

The Portuguese Under 19 international has yet to play a senior game for Sporting, but he could come into the squad and provide backup to Andy Robertson. James Milner has been covering in that position since the departure of Alberto Moreno last year.
