Liverpool battle Arsenal for Gelson Martins

Liverpool are reportedly considering a move for Arsenal target Gelson Martins.

The 23-year-old is in Russia with the Portugal squad for their World Cup campaign, and has been linked with a move away from Sporting Lisbon for the last couple of seasons.

It is believed that Arsenal had a £26m bid for the winger rejected earlier in the year, but Martins is of a number of players at Lisbon who have cancelled their contract at the club due to attacks that occurred from fans.

Martin’s breakthrough season came during the 2015/16 campaign, where he scored seven goals and four assists in 42 games. The following season he improved on those stats with six goals and nine assists for Sporting Lisbon.

However, it was last season where he really rose to prominence and caught the eye, scoring 13 goals and providing 13 assists in 52 games in all competitions.

A number of teams are interested in the Portuguese international, not least if he becomes available on a free transfer. Liverpool are the side most heavily linked with securing his signature, but will face competition from Merseyside rivals Everton as well as Arsenal and Chelsea.

Martins joins a number of star players in quitting the Estádio José Alvalade, with Rui Patricio, William Carvalho, Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Ribeiro, Bas Dost and Daniel Podence all reportedly terminating their contracts.
