Liverpool defender close to sealing Serie A switch

Liverpool defender Ragnar Klavan is close to completing a £2 million move to Serie A side Cagliari, according to reports.

The Estonian is expected to fly to Italy today to undergo a medical and agree personal terms before the Italian transfer deadline closes tonight.

The defender has one-year left on his contract at Anfield, however Liverpool are wanting to cash in while they can to avoid losing him for nothing next summer.

Klavan joined Liverpool in in 2016 from German side FC Ausburg, and has since made 53 appearances in all competitions for Jurgen Klopp’s side, scoring twice.

The 32-year-old has been a useful option for Klopp over the past two seasons, however has found regular football difficult to come by since the arrival of £75 million Virgil Van Dijk in January.

After the Dutchman’s switch to Anfield, Klavan was restricted to just two Premier League starts, and his lack of game time is set to continue this season.

Klavan is the club’s current fifth choice centre-back behind VVD, Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, and the former Ausburg star was not named in the squad for Liverpool’s 4-0 win over West Ham at the weekend.
