Liverpool fans react as Shaqiri scores stunning first Reds goal

Xherdan Shaqiri opened his Liverpool account in style with a superb overhead kick as Jurgen Klopp’s men thrashed Manchester United 4-1 in the International Champions Cup.

Shaqiri, who has walking out in Red for the first time since his £13 million move from Stoke City, stole the show in Ann Arbor as his new side swept aside a worryingly poor United.

Sadio Mane opened the scoring from the spot just before the half-hour mark, before Andreas Pereira levelled up just three minutes later with a brilliant 25-yard free-kick.

Second half-substitute Daniel Sturridge continued his fine pre-season form, firing home after some excellent hold up play from Shaqiri in the United box after 66 minutes, Sheyi Ojo added his side’s second spot-kick of the game six minutes later to make it 3-1.

Shaqiri then capped off a fine display for both him and his side when he finished off Ben Woodburn’s cross in acrobatic fashion –  a goal which perfectly summed up the gulf in class between the two sides on the day.

“[It was] very beautiful,” said Shaqiri reflecting on his stunning debut strike, “I think I’m used to doing it!

“No, I scored many times like this, I love bicycle kicks so I [am] always training this sometimes.

“The ball was perfect and why shouldn’t you try? So I tried it and it was a very beautiful goal.”

With all that practice, the Liverpool fans are hoping the Swiss star can do it again when the Reds meet United in December …
