Liverpool given boost in pursuit of Real Madrid star

Liverpool have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio.

The Spain international has reportedly fired a warning to the La Liga giants that he has offers on the table from a number of Europe’s top clubs, including Liverpool, and that he will take them up if he does not receive more game time.

Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea are also thought to be interested in the Madrid playmaker with United reportedly having the most serious interest as Jose Mourinho has been a long-standing admirer of the Spaniard.

According to a report in the Express last month during the winter transfer window, Jose Mourinho and Man United made what was termed a “massive” bid to bring the starlet to Old Trafford.

Given that United were linked with a move for Alexis Sanchez for almost the entire window until the deal was completed with Henrikh Mkhitaryan joining Arsenal in a straight swap. The size of the contract Sanchez signed at Old Trafford (a four year deal at £500,000 a week), made it seem somewhat unrealistic for United to also complete a mega-money move for Asensio in the winter window and so it proved.

Asensio burst onto the scene last year, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most promising youngsters, however he has struggled in his succeeding season at the Bernabeu.

The 22-year-old has made only 11 starts in La Liga this season, and is now reportedly ready to leave Madrid if manager Zinedine Zidane can’t guarantee him more first-team football.

Even if he is granted more game-time however, Asensio could still leave the Bernabeu at the end of the season and it is anybody’s guess where he could end up given the interest of the Premier League’s big boys. The Spaniard is reportedly one of a number of players keen to see Zidane shown the exit door at the club come the end of the season, with Madrid currently 17 points behind leaders Barcelona in the league table.

Diario Gol claim the 22-year-old has spoken with club president Florentino Perez and warned him he will have to consider his Madrid future if Zidane stays in charge and things don’t change.

Perez is understood to be keen to keep hold of a player he sees as crucial to the club’s future however, and will try to tie him down to a new long-term contract, with his current one expiring in 2023.
